Interview
PA ~ When did you take up your artistry and how long have you been involved with it?
The Birdy Four got together as a band in December 1999. We've all been involved with performing music in various bands since college.
PA ~ Musically, how would you describe your sound/genre?
Our music is sort of a dark blend of rock, folk, and pop. Someone came up with the term "earnest rock" to describe what we do. Basically, it's a non-ironic approach to writing and performing.
PA ~ Who are your influenced by?
A lot of different bands. I think we all have an appreciation for 70's music.
PA ~ I understand you have a CD called "Tortoise", what is the listener in store for?
Three of us are songwriters, so you'll hear a range of different songs. If the CD was released in the age of LPs, you'd hear a definite shift between side 1 and side 2, with side 1 featuring more acoustic-based tracks, and side 2 featuring more rockers.
PA ~ How is the CD being received?
We released a video for "Snowdog" (one of the tracks from "Tortoise") that has gotten some attention. It was directed Brian Jonas, and filmed over a zero-degree weekend in the dead of winter. Recently, it was shown at the Free Range Film Festival.
PA ~ Do you have a favorite composition on the CD?
"Snowdog" is a favorite. "Rosie" is a song we've been playing since the beginning. Although we don't play "A High and Mighty Star" in our live sets anymore, it was nice to put it on a disc.
PA ~ Any other projects or follow ups in the works presently?
We've been recording on and off in a home studio over the past few months. The mixes are sounding pretty decent, so we may make another album out of it.
PA ~ Do you perform outside of your hometown?
We have, but not too often. We're fortunate that there are quite a few clubs in St. Paul and Minneapolis that support local music. On the negative side, we're not getting our music out there as much as we could, but on the positive side, we still get to perform live on stage without sleeping in a bus.
PA ~ Where can someone find out more about The Birdy Four?
Our website: www.thebirdyfour.com. We've got links to shows, music, video, and what not.
